Four seasons in four weeks – New Zealand summer packing list
25 °C in Auckland, 8 °C at Franz Josef Glacier, wind in Wellington. If you pack for New Zealand, you pack for all weathers.
Clothing — Layering is key
- 3× functional T-shirts
- 2× long-sleeve shirts (merino or functional)
- 1× pair of short hiking pants, 2× pairs of long hiking pants (zip-off ideal)
- 1× warm down jacket (glacier, Tongariro)
- 1× hardshell rain jacket (West Coast, always bring it)
- 1× fleece sweater
- Hiking socks (3 pairs)
- Buff or thin scarf
- Hat + gloves (Franz Josef!)
Shoes
- Ankle-high hiking boots — Tongariro, Mt. Sunday, Putangirua Pinnacles
- Comfortable sneakers for the city
- Sandals or flip-flops (hot springs, beaches)
Tech
- Type I travel adapter (Australia/NZ standard)
- Large power bank (10,000+ mAh)
- Camera with wide-angle + telephoto lenses
- Drone (NOT allowed in many national parks — check beforehand!)
Miscellaneous
- Sandfly repellent (West Coast of the South Island — those little bastards are nasty)
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen SPF 50 (ozone hole bonus)
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Small first-aid kit
